Dahlia and I decided a few weeks ago that we wanted to have a
party and invite all of the teachers over to watch a movie on the
computer. So we charged up the computers
and made plans to have everyone over on Friday.
I have a few movies on my computer and we decided on The Lion, The Witch
and The Wardrobe. And when the new
teachers showed up this past week we thought it would be the perfect way to
celebrate their arrival. We soon
realized though that there are 10 teachers and we only have 6 chairs at our
house and a concrete floor. So we told
everyone that they have to bring their own chair. We said in America we have parties called
BYOD (“bring your own drink” or rather soda, since alcohol is so taboo). They thought this was the most hysterical
thing ever since hospitality, especially providing guests with food and drinks,
is so highly valued here. But we told
them that our party was going to be BYOC; bring your own chair. They loved it and so all week they have been
asking each other what chair they are going to bring. Anyway, the big night was last night and,
although no one actually brought a chair (so we sat Tanzanian student style all
sharing chairs) the night was great.
They loved the ‘American party’!
